Shop Log - 7/22/22

Picking up from where we left off last week , I not only finished sculpting all the parts for my beasty buck (and the head sculpt) but made silicone molds of all the parts as well. I did an initial casting today using some brown pigmented Flex-It 90 resin and while I couldn’t be happier with the arms and torso, I think I have some more work to do on the head sculpt. I plan to resculpt parts of the head to make the brows more detailed and possibly ditch the mouth full of fangs and just give him a pronounced underbite like the Lon Chaney Jr Wolf Man. I wasn’t expecting teeth to be so difficult to sculpt, but I think I know what I can do better. But the biggest problem so far with this initial casting is that he just doesn’t stand up without his display base. As you can see from the picture above, the urethane resin master part from which I made the legs mold can stand there just fine but when cast in my flexible resin and fully assembled with the other parts, there was a weight distr

Much the same as last week , I’ve been dividing my crafting time between a bunch of disparate resin casting/mold making projects, doing a little bit of each but not really making a ton of progress on any one thing. I’m hoping that a lot of what I have been working on will save me some time down the road, particularly my recent efforts in making a stockpile of rigid urethane parts (blanks) that I can later customize and mold as all new parts for future homebrew action figures. As you can see in the picture below, I’ve made urethane copies of my MOTU KO and wrestler legs, torsos, and heads (as well as the stand that I’ll include with my MOTU KO figures). I also finished sanding off all the details on my cheapo 4-inch scale toy soldiers and (not pictured here) covered up all the holes my dremel made in the hollow plastic with Apoxie Sculpt. But we’ll circle back to those momentarily… But first, I want to demonstrate what I mean when I say I’m going to customize the urethane resin blanks

My staycation has been flying by and it’s hard to believe it’s been almost a week since my last shop log. Thankfully, I do have something to show for it. As of today, I’ve finished casting the last five figures in my first wave of Mr. Boneface figures, completing the entire run of fifteen figures across three unique designs. Granted, they’re still long a way off from being ready for sale on my Etsy store. I need to do some final cleanup on the castings, prep them for paint, add the paint apps, figure out what to do for accessories and then cast those (more on that in a bit), and create their packaging (I’m still set on a simple poly bag and header card). But at least the really labor-intensive part of casting each part and assembling them is out of the way. As for their accessories, I want to give each Mr. Boneface at least one weapon (though I admit I haven’t had a ton of luck casting those in the past) and a wearable item of clothing that I initially planned to cut out of simple EVA

I’m taking some vacation time (nine days off work in total) so I’ll hopefully be able to get caught up on some of my more pressing crafting and writing projects. But for this Shop Log, I’ll give a brief update on where I’m at with my Mr. Boneface project and then get into some of my little side projects that I wrapped up over the course of the last few weeks. For one thing, I did manage to cast all five copies of Toxic Slime Pit Mr. Boneface, the first of my “finalized” designs for Wave 1 of the Mr. Boneface series. Granted, there’s still some minor cleanup to do, the painting prep, the paint apps themselves (which I mentioned in my previous Shop Log ), and whatever I ultimately decide to do for accessories before they’re ready for packaging, but the base figures themselves have all been cast. Before moving onto the next stage with my Toxic Slime Pit Mr. Boneface, I’m going to instead move on to casting all the parts for the next figure in the series. I’ve decided to make this ne
